Patch Testing

What is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to identify the specific substances that cause allergic contact dermatitis, a common skin condition resulting in itchy, red rashes. During this test, small, carefully measured amounts of common allergens, such as certain metals, fragrances, or preservatives, are applied to adhesive patches and then gently taped onto the patient’s back. Unlike immediate allergy tests, patch testing detects delayed immune reactions, so the patches remain in place for 48 hours. Subsequently, the skin is meticulously examined after 48 and often 72-96 hours (following patch removal) to observe any localized redness, swelling, or blistering, which indicates a positive allergic reaction to a specific substance. This precise method helps dermatologists and allergists pinpoint the exact culprits behind persistent skin irritation, enabling patients to effectively avoid these allergens and manage their condition.

How does patch testing work?

In patch testing, your Bellagio Family Medical, care provider applies a tiny amount of different possible allergens to small patches. They apply the patches to your skin, usually on either your arm or back. Usually, patch testing checks for multiple allergens at one time, so you may have many patches spaced slightly apart. You’ll wear the patches for 48 hours. The team gives you specific guidelines to follow while wearing the patches, such as avoiding bathing and strenuous exercise. After wearing the patches for the entire test period, you’ll return to the office for removal. As your care providers remove the patches, they check for local skin reactions that indicate allergies.
